  • Background
Human Artemin (ARTN), also known as enovin and neublastin, is a neurotrophic factor in the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) family of ligands within the TGF-beta superfamily of signaling molecules. The GDNF family ligands (GFLs) composed of GDNF, neurturin (NRTN), artemin (ARTN), and persephin (PSPN). They can influence the survival and function of peripheral and central neurons. Artemin is shown to be expressed by the Schwann cells and embryonic vascular smooth muscle cells. It promotes sensory neuron survival and likely plays a role in the development of the peripheral nervous system.
