  • Background
Recently, several members of the BTN /BTNL superfamily have been implicated in T cell response. BTN2A2 (butyrophilin 2a2), co-stimulatory molecule first discovered in APC cells, plays an important role in maintaining T cell homeostasis. Btn1a1 and Btn2a2 have been shown to inhibit T cell activity in mice, and secreted soluble Btn2a2 has been found to inhibit the proliferation of activated CD4 and CD8T cells and reduce T cell receptor signaling by reducing Zap70, CD3E and ERK phosphorylation. As a cell surface protein, Btn2a2 can be expressed in CD19+B cells, CD11c+ spleen DC cells and CD11b+Ly6Glow peritoneal macrophages.
