Background

ICAM-1 (CD54) is a 90 kDa immunoglobulin superfamily adhesion molecule with low basal expression that is strongly induced by inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1) via the NF-κB/JAK-STAT pathways. It mediates immune cell adhesion and transendothelial migration by binding to LFA-1/Mac-1 on leukocytes, and also participates in T-cell immunological synapse formation. In tumors such as TNBC, HCC, and gastric cancer, high ICAM-1 expression on tumor cells promotes invasion and metastasis, correlating with poor prognosis.
