Background

The activation of T lymphocytes involves a wide variety of cellular changes. Some of these changes are biochemical in nature, such as phosphatidylinositol catabolism and the elevationof cellular calcium. Others are genetic, involving the induction of specific gene expression. Among the constellation of genes induced following T cell activation are several cell surface molecules. One of the earliest of these to be expressed is CD69 (previously known as activation inducer molecule or AIM, EA-1, Leu-23,and MLR3). Within one to two h of activation, CD69 can be found on the cell surface, with expression persisting at least three days. Studies with monoclonal antibodies (MAb) to CD69 have shown that it is a costimulatory molecule for T cell proliferation. In addition, CD69 expression can be induced on most, if not all, cells of hematopoietic origin.
